What changed

A real change. The Finance Act 2026 substituted section 428 from 1 April 2026: the late-return fee is unchanged, but there is now a fee for late revised returns (the revision window was extended to 12 months), and fixed fees replace the earlier penalties for missing the tax audit and transfer pricing reports.

Practice notes

  • Revised returns: section 263(5) now allows revision up to twelve months from the end of the tax year (or before assessment), subject to the 428(b) fee.
  • Returns for AY 2026-27 filed late are still charged under section 234F.
