What changed

The biggest conceptual change of the new Act: 'previous year' and 'assessment year' are replaced by a single 'tax year'. Most other provisions in this range are renumbered with the same substance.

Practice notes

  • FY 2026-27 is 'tax year 2026-27'; returns, TDS and notices refer to the tax year.
  • Section 9B (asset received from firm on reconstitution) is section 8; 5A (Portuguese Civil Code spouses) is section 10.
  • Residence (6) and income deemed to accrue in India (9) have their own pages.

These are summaries, not the statutory text. Read the bare Act for both sections on the Income Tax Department's official site, which also has a side-by-side comparison utility.
