Frequently asked
How is income tax on salary calculated for tax year 2026-27?
Start with total salary, take out exempt allowances (HRA and LTA only in the old regime), then the standard deduction (₹75,000 new regime, ₹50,000 old) and professional tax (old regime). Add house property and other income, subtract Chapter VIII deductions (old regime, apart from employer NPS), and apply the slab rates, the section 156 rebate, surcharge above ₹50 lakh and 4% cess.
Which tax regime should a salaried employee choose for 2026-27?
Compute both — the calculator always shows old and new side by side. The regime you declare to the employer only decides monthly TDS; without business income you can pick either regime each year in the original return filed by the due date.
How does the employer work out monthly TDS on salary?
Under section 392 (old 192) the employer estimates tax for the whole year, subtracts the tax already deducted, and spreads the balance over the remaining months. The projected computation does exactly this from the month you select.
Can I claim relief on arrears of salary received this year?
Yes. Section 157 (old 89(1)) gives relief when arrears push income into a higher slab. File Form 39 (old Form 10E) on the e-filing portal before the return. The calculator computes Annexure I and Table A using each earlier year's slabs.
Is the salary data I enter stored anywhere?
No. The figures stay in the open page only. Nothing is saved or sent anywhere, and closing or refreshing the page clears them — print or save the statement as PDF before you close.
Can I use it for FY 2025-26?
Yes. Choose FY 2025-26 to apply the Income-tax Act, 1961: 50% HRA only in the four metros, and the ₹5,000 entertainment allowance deduction for Government employees in the old regime.
