Frequently asked

Which section replaces 80C in the new Income Tax Act?

Section 123 read with Schedule XV of the Income-tax Act, 2025, with the same ₹1.5 lakh limit, under the old regime only.

Is HRA exemption available under the new tax regime?

No. HRA (Schedule III, Sl. No. 11) is excluded under section 202(2)(a). Under the old regime, 50% of salary applies in eight cities from 2026-27 (Rule 279).

What is the standard deduction for salaried employees in 2026-27?

₹75,000 under the new regime and ₹50,000 under the old regime (section 19(1), Table Sl. No. 2).

Up to what salary is income tax nil in 2026-27?

Under the new regime, total income up to ₹12 lakh gets a full rebate (section 156), so salary up to ₹12.75 lakh is effectively tax-free after the ₹75,000 standard deduction.

Can a salaried employee switch between old and new regimes every year?

Yes. Without business income, the choice is made each year in the original return filed by the due date (section 202(4)).
